Facebook messenger can now be used without a Facebook account.

Facebook messenger no longer requires a facebook account. From today(24th june), New messenger users in the United states, Canada, Peru and Venezuela can sign up using a full name and phone number.

Messenger can still be used with a Facebook account. To import the contacts the new users can use "Log In With Facebook" button on the start screen.Signing in with a name and phone number won't sync your chats across devices. Facebook says the aim is to reach more people. Its worth noting that while creating a Messenger log-in won't import contacts, the rest of Messengers services like video chat and stickers remain available.

A messenger without a linked Facebook account is more beneficial for businesses. A business could link any phone number to messenger.

Here’s how it works:

  • On the Messenger welcome screen, you will now see an option that says “Not on Facebook?”
  • From there, you can sign up with your name, phone number and a photo.

For those who have Facebook accounts, there are many benefits to using your Facebook credentials when signing up for Messenger. People can easily message with their Facebook friends and contacts, access their Facebook messages and take advantage of multi-device messaging across mobile devices, the web and tablets.
